F.A.Q.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does it work?

The hot air gets trapped in your attic and acts like a large heated blanket that in turn heats up the air inside your home. The Whole House Fan takes the warm air from every part of your home and replaces it with the cooler outside air. It does this by pulling in the cooler outside air through one or two open windows. The warm air is pulled out of your home and is pushed out the attic vents – cooling your attic as well as your living area. For a more detail explanation click here.

How Long Does a Whole House fan take to cool down my home?

The air in your home will be exchanged approximately every 8 minutes by the six steel aerodynamic, balanced blades that are designed to remove the hot air quickly and quietly. Just flip the switch on for 30 to 60 minutes at the beginning and end of each day. This will enable you to run your air conditioning fewer hours and enjoy comfortable living for less!

Is the Whole House Fan noisy?

Our fan is designed exclusively for us and to our standards. Unlike fans sold in the hardware stores that have only 4 aluminum blades and sound like an old World War II war plane, our Whole House Fan has six steel aerodynamic, balanced blades. It runs quietly enough to sleep with it on. Many of our happy customers leave it running all night and enjoy the cool, quiet “breeze” that it generates.

How much does it cost to operate?

Our Whole House Fan is very energy efficient – It can run for 12 hours a night for the same cost as your porch light (approximately 35¢ per night)! Most of our customers spend an average of only 85¢ a day to operate our Whole House Fan. (This is based on running it for 30-60 minutes in the morning and then again in the evening when the outside temperature cools down). By comparison it costs an average of 85¢ to run your air conditioner for only 45 minutes. SMUD says that by properly using a whole house fan, many people can reduce their air conditioning bill by as much as half!

Does it require maintenance?

No, our fans do not require any maintenance.

What’s the difference between a Whole house fan and other products on the market?

We’ve compiled a list of “Pros” and “Cons” for products currently available on the market.

Swap Cooler

  • Advantage: energy efficient way to cool the home.
  • Disadvantage: the house is subject to humidity creating mold and mildew. Does nothing to remove heat from the attic.

Smart Vent

  • Advantage: a part of the A/C System bringing in outside air.
  • Disadvantage: ineffective for cooling the attic. The system brings in outside cool air but as it goes though the duct system the air is warmed.

Attic Fan

  • Advantage: cools down the attic with Gable vents.
  • Disadvantage: It only cools down the attic but doesn’t make a noticeable difference in the house.

Solar Fan

  • Advantage: an attic fan run by solar power.
  • Disadvantage: does not move enough cubic feet of air so only the attic is cooled.

Space Fan

  • Advantage: bought on the internet and fits between trusses for easy installation.
  • Disadvantage: not enough power to exchange the attic air with outside air.

Whole House Fan

  • Advantage: powerful enough to purge the house and attic of hot air for pennies a day which saves on utility costs.
  • Disadvantage: a minimal amount  of noise like a small room fan.

Quiet Cool (TM)

  • Advantage: it fits between the trusses and is an easy self installation.
  • Disadvantage: It doesn’t move enough cubit feet per minute CFM to cool down the hot Sacramento attics.
